How to Store Fresh Fruits and Vegetables in Abu Dhabi's Climate
Abu Dhabi’s hot and humid climate can be challenging when it comes to keeping fruits and vegetables fresh. With temperatures regularly climbing above 40 degrees Celsius during summer months, proper storage is essential to prevent spoilage, reduce waste, and get the most value from your grocery shopping.
At KA Fresh Fruits & Vegetables, we source the freshest produce every morning for families and businesses across MBZ City, Musaffah, and Mussafah Shabiya. Here are our expert tips for storing your fruits and vegetables to maintain peak freshness.
Understanding Abu Dhabi’s Climate Impact
The combination of high heat and humidity in Abu Dhabi accelerates the ripening and decay process of most fresh produce. Ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that triggers ripening, builds up faster in warm conditions. Without proper ventilation and temperature control, your leafy greens can wilt within hours, and berries may develop mold overnight.
Refrigeration Best Practices
Not all produce belongs in the refrigerator, but for items that do, temperature control is critical. Set your refrigerator to between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius for optimal produce storage. The crisper drawer is designed to maintain higher humidity levels, making it ideal for leafy greens, herbs, and vegetables.
Leafy greens like spinach, lettuce, and coriander should be stored in breathable bags or wrapped in paper towels to absorb excess moisture. Replace the paper towels every two days for best results. Herbs such as mint, parsley, and basil can be placed in a glass of water on your counter, much like a bouquet of flowers, or wrapped in damp paper towels and stored in the refrigerator.
Counter Storage for Tropical and Ripening Fruits
Tropical fruits including mangoes, bananas, pineapples, and papayas should be kept at room temperature until ripe. Once they reach your desired ripeness, you can move them to the refrigerator to slow further ripening. Tomatoes, avocados, and stone fruits also ripen best on the counter.
To speed up ripening, place fruits in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple. The ethylene gas emitted will accelerate the process naturally. Once ripe, transfer to the refrigerator to extend shelf life by several days.
Separate Ethylene Producers from Sensitive Items
Certain fruits and vegetables produce high levels of ethylene gas, which can cause nearby produce to spoil faster. Keep apples, bananas, avocados, and tomatoes away from leafy greens, carrots, cucumbers, and peppers. Storing them in separate drawers or containers prevents premature wilting and decay.
Proper Washing and Drying
Wait to wash most produce until just before you use it. Excess moisture is one of the biggest causes of mold and rot in stored fruits and vegetables. If you prefer to wash items in advance, dry them thoroughly using a salad spinner or clean kitchen towels before storage.
Berries are particularly sensitive to moisture. Rinse them gently in a mixture of water and white vinegar (three parts water to one part vinegar), then dry completely before refrigerating in a container lined with paper towels.
Bulk Buying and Storage for Families
Many families in MBZ City and Musaffah take advantage of our bulk order services to save on grocery costs. When buying in bulk, proper storage becomes even more important. Consider investing in airtight containers, vacuum sealing for freezer storage, and designated refrigerator zones for different produce categories.
Root vegetables like potatoes, onions, and garlic should be stored in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight. Never store onions and potatoes together, as onions release gases that cause potatoes to sprout.
When to Buy Fresh
No storage technique can compensate for produce that was not fresh to begin with. At KA Fresh, we receive new stock every morning and inspect every batch for quality. When you shop with us or arrange delivery, you are getting produce at peak freshness, which means it will last longer in your kitchen.
